What is abstract art?

Abstract art is a style of art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of reality. Instead, abstract art uses shapes, colors, forms and creative marks to achieve it’s desired effect.

Some of the major types of abstract art are Cubism, Fauvism, Suprematism, Constructivism, Rayonism, Simultanism, Tachisme, Neo-plasticism, Concrete art, Objective abstraction, Abstract expressionism, Minimalism, Post-painterly abstraction and Op art.

Abstract art can be interpreted in many different ways. Some people see it as a way to express emotions, while others see it as a way to explore the formal elements of art. There is no one right way to appreciate abstract art, which I love. It’s up to each individual to decide what they see in it.

Best supplies for making Abstract art

Really ALL things can be used in some form or fashion to make abstract art. From pennies, to spoons to dry wall spackle! However, below are some of my favorite more common art supplies that help a project look more professional.

  • Acrylic paints
These are super popular for abstract art due to their versatility, fast drying time and wide range of colors and finishes (matte, gloss, etc.).
  • Paint Markers
I love paint markers when you have a need for something bold and permanent. They are also great for filling in spaces with bright color strokes.
  • Watercolor
Watercolors can create beautiful, flowing abstract washes and effects. But they can be more difficult I think when just starting out. Consider using watercolor on surfaces other than paper.
  • Mixed Media
Don’t be afraid to combine different types of paint! Explore how acrylics interact with watercolors, inks, or even house paints for unique textures and effects.
  • Canvas
Traditional and readily available in various sizes and thicknesses at most nearly all craft supply stores and big box stores. Choose a canvas primed for acrylics if you’re using them.
  • Paper
Heavyweight watercolor paper or mixed media paper can handle various wet and dry media. Canson XL Media Pad is a popular and affordable choice.
  • Wood Panels
Offer a sturdy surface and a different feel compared to canvas. I painted a lovely art piece in my hallway using wood blocks.
  • Anything Goes
Think outside the box! Try painting on cardboard, fabric, metal, or even found objects. Hot glue coins, yarn or even sticks to the canvas. Have fun layering different materials on each other and painting over them.
