Cassette Case turned Memory Box

I recently stopped by a local thrift store and found a few wonderfully old pieces of luggage for quite a bargain of a price.  See how I was able to take this old Cassette Case turned Memory Box for my son’s little treasures!

My first step was removing the actual cassette plastic holder.  Then I ripped out the faux leather/plastic material on the top interior.
Next came the measurements.  I had saved (I have no idea why) this tablecloth from kiddo #2’s FIRST birthday!  Yes, I kept a tablecloth for over a year and a half… but now that I’m actually using it, I was glad I had. #hoardingproblems
I measured the interior sides and length and width and drew out a little diagram to help my visualize it all.  Then, I did some cutting.

Next, Mod Podge to the rescue.  I applied a light coat to the sides and bottom.  I had intended on doing both the top and bottom with the fabric, but it seemed too busy.

Instead, I left the top without the fabric and painted it a bold yellow color with simple acrylic paint.

I applied chalkboard paint to the exterior and painted all the metal lock, handle and edging in gold.

So cute, right?

I envision this slowly filling with the cherished memories of a little boy.

  1. I redid a smaller CD case before but, I love the idea of using the chalk paint on the exterior! Yours turned out great! Thanks for sharing @DearCreatives party. Theresa

  2. What a lovely idea. My kids have a show box each in the loft with 1st birthday cards, hair from their first haircuts, the wrist band from the hospital, cards they have made for each other over the years, that sort of thing. I am now thinking maybe I could put these things in something a bit nicer than an old shoe box!

  3. This is such a sweet idea! I love the tablecloth lining too! Good job on hanging on to that (I totally have the table cloth from my four year old’s first birthday party and it is not nearly as cute)

  4. LOVE this. I redo suitcases all of the time for memory boxes and will be on the lookout for one of these too. Great size for little trinkets. I am working on another memory box for a friend for the blog too. They are so fun 🙂
