When my sister invited me to join on a long weekend getaway celebrating her birthday in Wine Country I couldn’t say, yes please fast enough. She lives in California and had been once before, so she planned all of the trip and I got to tag along for the fun and celebrations!
She shared many of the Sonoma County hidden gems with me and I’m so excited to be able to share our Healdsburg weekend itinerary so you all can also enjoy some of the best wineries in Dry Creek Valley!

I love to document things, so I got us a wine tasting journal to bring to each spot we visited during the weekend. Even if you are a novice wine drinker, this is a fun way to remember all the vineyards you visit and which glasses you enjoyed the most. After a few tasting samples, it’s hard to remember one glass of wine from another so I found the practice to be not only enjoyable, but also so helpful!
Here are a few simple, but lovely wine tasting journals I liked –
- Hardback Wine Tasting journal (gorgeous cover and tons of helpful information inside)
- Blue Paperback Wine Tasting Journal (smaller in size)
- Letterfolk Wine Passport Journal (This was the one we used)
- Lovely green Wine Tasting Journal

What is the difference between a vineyard and a winery?
I never quite know which term I should use when referring to the place that grows grapes – vineyard or winery, so I decided to deep dive and learn for myself!
A vineyard is the location where grapes are grown. A winery is a licensed facility where grapes are processed and fermented into wine. While many large estates encompass both, they serve distinct purposes—a vineyard is a farm focused and the winery is the production location.
Healdsburg weekend itinerary
Whether you are a seasoned California regular or planning your first trip to Sonoma County, Healdsburg is a GREAT Wine Country visit! It’s no longer just a “sleepy alternative” to Napa – it’s a design-forward, foodie powerhouse that still feels like a small town.
If you want to do a Healdsburg weekend right – without the “tourist trap” fatigue—here is your guide.
Side adventure to a brewery
Now, I know this a post all about wine and Sonoma Valley but since you’ll be in the area, I thought it was only right to share one of our favorite breweries, Russian River Brewing Company. For legendary craft beer, drive about 40 minutes northwest to their downtown brewpub at 725 4th St, Santa Rosa, CA.
Famous for cult-favorite beers like Pliny the Elder double IPA, it features great food, a lively atmosphere, and fantastic pub grub. You honestly can not get Pliny the Elder hardly anywhere, so this is a beer lovers treat!
We stopped in, had dinner and got a flight of beers. And also snagged a beloved tshirt for my husband!

Friday: The One-Hour Wine Education
Make sure to get reservations to The Matheson on the Plaza. Their “Wine Wall” features 88 self-serve taps covering the three main local appellations (A wine appellation dictates where the grapes were grown and often governs permitted grape varieties, yields, and winemaking methods.) – Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley.
It’s a great way to figure out if you’re a “crisp Chardonnay” person or a “bold Zinfandel” person before you commit to a full tasting day. We ate on the roof (Roof 106) and had lovely small plate appitizers (sushi rolls, asian chicken wraps and edamame), a cocktail (their cocktails are incredible) and a glass of Pinot Grigio.

This was a great restaurant to introduce ourselves to the area, enjoy downtown Healdsburg and feel great to kick the weekend of wine tasting off! FYI, the main floor restaurant is pricier than the rooftop, so decide your spending budget before making reservations.
Saturday: The Tasting Day
If you are at a complete loss for where to start, plan to drive along Dry Creek Road as there are numerous open to the public vineyards along this stretch. Many have signs out at the roadside stating if they do walk-in tastings or reservation tastings.
Dry Creek Road, spanning both Dry Creek Rd and West Dry Creek Rd is home to over 70 wineries just minutes from downtown Healdsburg. So you will have quite a few to choose from!
Pro Tip – Start early to beat the midday heat. Your first stop should be Dry Creek General Store for a delicious sandwich to pack in your bag during your day of tastings.
Most are open roughly 10am to 4:30pm and often it’s a good idea to make reservations beforehand because the popular ones fill up quickly.
Here are some of our favorite wineries along Dry Creek Road –
- Papapietro-Perry – SO welcoming and down to Earth. Great wine options!
- CAST Wines – This was probably the busiest winery we visited, felt like many “girl’s trips” were also there enjoying a tasting.
- Dutcher Crossing Winery – I loved this spot! Very adorable tasting room and even at the very end of the day, they were happy to pour for us.
- Kokomo Winery We went here for an evening reservation only Dinner Event, which was such fun. Also they are proud of their Kokomo, Indiana heritage (Go Hoosiers!).

We bought tickets to the Kokomo Winery dinner event beforehand as my sister loves this winery maybe most of all. We started with a glass of white before heading back to the event. The dinner was homestyle food paired with numerous bottles of wine. We enjoyed tasting a handful of them and both left the dinner purchasing a bottle to take home! (Boiler up!)

Sunday: Souvenirs, Style and Strolling the Plaza
The historic plaza is a shopper’s paradise, entirely free of national chains. Instead, you’ll find a wonderful curated collection of independent, locally owned boutiques that make it impossible to leave without at least a few purchases!
If your hotel doesn’t serve breakfast, start your morning by grabbing a delicious pastry from Quail and Condor before diving into the shops.
For the ultimate design inspiration, make Gathered (Gathered Wildeflowers) on Center Street your first stop. It is an absolute gem with a beautifully curated items like books, stationary, jewelry, candles and so much more. We loved this spot!

Next, wander over to Forager, which is packed to the brim with beautiful, useful decor, kitchen, tabletop and more to elevate everyday living. I would glad take everything in their store.
And if you are looking for stunning elevated home decor with a twist of natural, look no further than the incredible Maison Smith. I was just thrilled to find out after falling in love with everything in their store, that they have one other location and it’s in Santa Fe, NM (just an hour from where I live!).
Best hotel to stay in during Wine Weekend
We choose to stay in Hotel Trio for a few reasons like you get oversized, suite-style rooms with full kitchens, plus a complimentary hot breakfast. They have a heated outdoor pool and a robot butler named Rosé that delivers treats to your door!

Situated at the center of Dry Creek, Alexander and Russian River valleys – the hotel sits right off Highway 101, putting world-class wine tastings a short drive away.
While the hotel is only about a mile from Healdsburg Plaza, the hotel offers a free shuttle to the downtown area and complimentary bikes so you can easily explore local restaurants and shops.
You can enjoy on-site perks like an automated wine bar, fire pits, and a bocce ball court.

Side adventures during off Wine Tasting hours
One thing I did not realize before spending time in the Dry Creek Valley was that Wineries are not open like normal business hours for tastings. I just assumed that they’d be open for tastings from like 9am to evening hours and that is not the case. There is a large portion of your day that is open to fill.
Armstrong Redwood Forest
Located roughly 16 miles south of Healdsburg in Guerneville, Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve is a peaceful park of redwood trees.
Hiking in the Armstrong Woods Redwood Forest is spectacular with very easy walking trails, towering coast redwoods and is well-regarded by visitors. There is something about trees that is so calming to the nervous system and then walking through Redwoods that have been around from 500 to 1,000 YEARS is just remarkable on every level.

Drive along the Coastline
There are endless gorgeous lookout spots along the coastline of California and if you have spare time anyway, this is a great way to spend a morning!
