Growing your own vegetables and herbs is one of my favorite things to do in the summer time. I have written numerous posts about gardens – things like Creating simple Raised Vegetable Gardens, the Best Raised Vegetable Garden Tools, Small Garden Compost Bins and Garden Tool Pegboard Organization.

But today I am excited to share some incredible ideas on unique and creative herb gardens! These will hopefully inspire and excite you to think outside the box for where and how you can grow herbs in your home and garden.

Where to do Herb Gardens

There are endless places you can install an herb garden to enjoy the fruits of your harvest! However, here are three of my favorite ways/locations!

Kitchen Windowsill

Bring your herbs right to the space you are cooking with a sunny kitchen windowsill. Small pots filled with your favorite herbs like rosemary, thyme and parsley are perfect to get started with. You can also choose self watering planters (this type is so cool looking, also!) for hassle-free maintenance.

For those with more limited sunlight, consider growing herbs like chives and mint – which can tolerate lower light conditions.

Tabletop Herb Gardens

Ready for the most lovely tabletop herb garden I have maybe seen to date? Check out this Food52 Gold tabletop herb garden with a built in light. It’s so dreamy!!

Growing herbs right on a counter or table makes it so much eaiser to make sure the plants are getting what they need, from their ideal light conditions to how much water they may need.

Upcycled Containers

Give new life and repurpose teacups, watering cans, boots or even wooden crates as unique herb planters. This Earth-friendly idea adds character to your garden while reducing waste. Try out different herbs and container combinations to create one of a kind displays.

What is the best layout for an herb garden?

There are so many fun layout options when it comes to designing an herb garden.

Square or rectangular beds are the more traditional route. Or designing a garden with a center focal point like a sundial or a sculpture.

Themed layouts based on culinary uses or growth habits are also fun options for someone who loves the design process as much as the gardening itself.

What is the hardest herb to grow?

The hardest herb to grow can vary depending on your climate, experience level, and specific growing conditions. However, some herbs are generally considered more challenging than others. But please note, just because these herbs may be a little more difficult, does not mean you can’t grow them at all. You may just need to experiment and try a few times before you figure them out!

  • Lavender: Known for its fragrant flowers, lavender can be picky about soil, sunlight and drainage.  (I tried lavender a few different times and finally had a success!)
  • Basil: While popular, basil can be susceptible to pests and diseases, especially in humid environments. (I always have to buy a few plants before mine take off.)
  • Cilantro: This herb requires cooler weather, as it tends to “bolt” (go to seed quickly) when temperatures get too warm.
  • Dill: Dill is a biennial herb that can be finicky to start from seed and may not thrive in all climates.
