I have declared 2026 my “Paint by Number” YEAR!
I’ve done three of them so far and it’s only March, ha. There has been something so lovely about having a kit sitting out that I can work on to destress and still make art. It reminds me of a doing a puzzle almost, but more creative.
I am SO excited to start this one soon! Classic green and white striped cafe, so adorable!!
And can we talk about how far paint by number kits have come since the days of my childhood??! No more are the Crayola crayon colored rainbows, the kits now are complex images of flowers, windows overlooking the ocean and just about everything in between! The paint colors are stunning and it’s all I can do to not sit for hours and work on them.

Whether you’re looking for a way to escape the digital grind or just want to feel like a modern-day Monet without the years of art school, adult paint-by-number kits are having a serious moment and I am here for it.
The Surprising Revival of Paint by Number: Your Guide to a Relaxing New Hobby
Have you noticed your social media feeds filling up with vibrant masterpieces people are creating in a few days? It’s not just you. Paint by Number kits are experiencing a massive revival and I am officially obsessed.

Once dismissed as a kitschy relic of the 1950s, these newer kits have been completely reimagined for modern makers. If you’re looking for a creative outlet that is genuinely relaxing, requires zero previous skill and ends with an impressive piece of DIY wall art, it’s time to pick up a brush.
Here is a look at why this classic craft is back…
The Ultimate Stress Reliever
We spend our days making a thousand decisions—what to cook for dinner, how to manage the kids’ schedules or what keywords to target in our next post. The beauty of paint-by-numbers is that the decisions are already made for you. Thaaaaank you.
There is something deeply meditative about matching a tiny pot of acrylic paint to a numbered shape on a canvas. It’s “flow state” in a box. It lowers cortisol, improves focus and provides a sense of accomplishment that a scrolling session on social media never will.

Why Paint by Number Kits for Adults Are Booming
We are all over-scheduled and glued to screens. Unlike other hobbies that demand “mastery” or intense focus, Paint by Numbers provide a structured easy creative mode.
When you map colors to numbered segments, your brain gets to rest. The decision-making is done and your only job is to stay inside the lines and watch the image emerge. It is meditative, tactile, and incredibly rewarding.

Furthermore, the quality of kits available now is night and day compared to the options from years past. Forget muddy colors and simple designs. Today, you can find stunning complex landscapes, abstract art, and famous classic reproductions. The pigmented acrylics provided are vibrant and the designs are intricate and mature.
One tip I will give you is this, don’t be embarrassed to buy and wear readers for these kits – ha! I’m 45 and overall my eye sight is just fine… however, I got cute readers (1.25x) and my oh my, they help when doing my paint by number kit! Some of those space to paint are TINY.

Why “Adult” Kits are Different
Forget the simple primary-colored clowns or kittens from your childhood.

From moody landscapes and abstract botanicals to custom portraits of your pets the kits for adults are so very cool. Plus, they now come as linen canvases with vacuum-sealed acrylics and professional-grade brushes. (Although, I always recommend having a few other small detail brushes on hand.)

Once finished, many of these kits are genuinely stylish enough to frame and hang in your living room!
Tips for a finished piece of art
If you want your canvas to look less like a craft project and more like a piece of art you’d like to hang on the wall, try these tricks below.
- Iron your canvas: Use a low heat setting to get rid of fold lines before you start. I often don’t do this and when I’ve completed the painting – I always regret not doing a quick iron.
- Add a drop of water: If your paint feels too thick, a single drop of water added to the paint pot can help it glide smoother over the linen.
- Don’t stress over the lines: Once you’re done, you will be amazed how perfectly crisp lines almost blur into each other. Make your line work as clean as you can, but it matters less than you think – so don’t stress over it.
- Invest in Better Brushes: The brushes included in most kits are… very okay. For $10, you can buy a set of decent detail brushes (look for size 0, 00, or 1) that will make filling small segments so much easier.
- Don’t Let the Paint Dry Up: Modern acrylics dry fairly fast. Keep the little pots sealed tightly when not in use. If a color seems thick, add one single drop of water to revive it.
