Creativity inspired by Big Box Stores

Creativity is an amazing thing and being inspired by someone else’s creativity is just the coolest.

During recent summers, a handful of creatives and I decided to challenge ourselves to be inspired by various Home Decor stores and recreate a project from that inspiration.

Our stores were West Elm, Zara Home, Urban Outfitters and Anthropolgie.  All four are amazing stores and I had such an amazing time simply trying to pick a project to recreate!

I love being able to see side by sides of their products and mine.

CB2

CB2 has become such an inspirational store over the years! They really have pivoted from a lovely store to one that carries cutting edge decor with the highest trends and the most gorgeous materials.

It is a special day to even come across a brick and mortar CB2 store as they are more elite and uncommon to find just in any old mall.

However back in 2015 when I did this project, their decor items were a bit more every day. I found this fun 4′ tall metal cactus wall sculpture on their site and knew I needed to do my best to recreate it!

Check out how I was able to make an Easy Cacti Wall Decor piece using a few simple materials!

Land of Nod / Crate & Kids

I remember scrolling item by item on the Land of Nod’s website just drooling at their inovative and trendy kid’s decor! I just absolutely loved that store and even had the honor of working with them on my daughter’s bedroom in our rental house.

Sadly, Land of Nod said goodbye, BUT Crate & Kids was born!

Crate & Kids is just as lovely as Land of Nod was. Their decor is playful yet sophisticated for even adults. They blend modern colorful design with a warm feel.

When I saw this beautiful Land of Nod lampshade for $49, I knew right away I could make something very similar for a fraction of the cost!

Anthropologie

Oh dear sweet, Anthro! What a beautiful store. I love that Anthropologie mainly features clothing, but also has a wonderful home decor department. I love that because I could never consistantly afford Anthro’s clothing, but I’m always game for a candle, lamp, dish or journal!

I absolutely loved this geometric chandelier when I saw it. I wasn’t sure at first how I could recreate it, but in the end I was pretty proud of this inspired DIY lamp.

And we circled back to Anthropologie a year later, which I was thrilled out.

This time, I choose a gorgeous piece of jewelry! The original was gold scalloped metal, but I made mine from a very surprising material!! I loved how my necklace turned out.

West Elm

Hands down, West Elm has been my favorite home decor store since… adulthood! I love their mix of natural materials in modern or even Mid-Century Modern ways. I have often joked I would move into a West Elm store. We own a West Elm sofa and outdoor Dining Table, along with many smaller items.

I loved the geometric, but almost graffiti look of this artwork. I grabbed myself a large canvas and some paint markers and went to town.

Zara

Zara is another store that has both clothing and home decor. They are well known for off the runway looks and their home decor line is no different.

I created this fun white object picture frame and think it turned out really cute.

Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters is a lifestyle retail company that is geared towards young adults. They offer a range of trendy clothing, accessories and home decor in vintage, bohemian and urban aesthetic.

It felt very fitting to create hanging prism type sculptures from their site.
