I recently completed my son’s teen bedroom and one of the DIYs I worked on was updating his very old and outdated bifold closet doors.

After putting on new large circular hardware for the closet pulls, I had a huge amount of excitement over on Instagram. So, I decided to dive a little deeper into this new trend here on the blog.

Let’s get more into door handles, door hardware and door knobs now!

Will any door handle fit any door?

Sadly, not all handles fit all doors. Knowing a little bit about your specific door can before starting an update project will help you find the perfect match.

Door handle mechanism

There are different types of door handles designed for different functions.

  • Passage door handles are for doors that don’t need to lock.
  • Privacy handles have a lock on the inside but not the outside.
  • Keyed entry handles can be locked from both the inside and outside with a key.

Door handle measurements

Door handles need to fit specific measurements for the door itself. This include the thickness of the door and the distance between the center of the doorknob or handle and the edge of the door (backset).

While there isn’t a universal “door handle”, many door handles are adjustable to fit a range of backset measurements.

Do they make different size door knobs?

Yes, however door knobs are manufactured to fit to specific dimensional standards to ensure functionality and aesthetics. There are two primary measurements to consider when specifying a door knob:

  • Door Knob Diameter
This measurement corresponds to the width of the knob at its widest point, typically taken across the center.

Standard door knob diameters fall within a range of 1 ¾ inches to 3 inches, with the most common sizes being 2⅜ inches and 2 ¾ inches.

However, decorative door knobs can deviate from this range and may be larger or smaller depending on the design.
  • Backset
This measurement refers to the distance between the center of the door knob or handle and the edge of the door. It signifies the depth to which the knob or handle sits within the door bore.

Similar to the diameter, two standard backset measurements prevail in the market: 2⅜ inches and 2 ¾ inches.

Yes, oversized hardware can contribute to a more modern feeling room.  They can also add drama and visual interest to cabinets and doors.

Clean lines, geometric shapes and a minimalist design in an oversized knob tend to lean more modern.
