I have grown many many String of Pearl plants over the years and love them for their unique shaped “leaves”. Plus if you are looking for a lovely trailing plant, this one is for you, as they grow older, they slowly cascade down their pot or container!
Imagine my SHOCK after all these years, when I realized the very rare V. String of Pearls!!
Are Variegated String of Pearls rare?
Yes! Variegated String of Pearls are very new and rare right now. I went to my favorite local nursery and they had them and for a small 3″ pot it was roughly $6.99. I’m sure with time the cost will reduce as more and more nurseries start to grow them.
String of Pearls vs String of Turtles vs Variegated String of Pearls
The Var. String of Pearls have green “bead” leaves that are streaked with cream, pink or white color. The botanical name of this plant is Vari Curio rowleyanus, but it used to be known as Senecio rowleyanus Variegata.
Although they have all have similar names (String of Pearls, String of Turtles and V. String of Pearls), their look and needs are different.
What is the difference between string of pearls and variegated string of pearls?
The coloring and growth rate are the two main differences between string of pearls and variegated string of pearls. However both of them trail down as they grow and can get up to 2 feet long.
The variegated plant has a combination of green, cream, white and light pink bead leaves. Chlorophyll is the natural compound present in green plants that gives them their color. It helps plants to absorb energy from the sun as they undergo the process of photosynthesis. Since this special variety lack the full green color, photosynthesis is slower – meaning growth is slower.
How often should I water my Var. String of Pearls plant?
This plant is remarkably drought tolerant. But, since their “pearl leaves” often fill the soil and plant, you can’t as easily do the finger test to check on their water moisture levels.
So, sticking to watering your plant every 8 to 10 days in summer (if indoors) and roughly every 3-4 weeks in the winter is a good rule of thumb.
If your plant is an outdoor plant, you can water about once a week in the warmer months.
Do Variegated String of Pearls need direct sunlight?
Var. String of Pearls are more sensitive to direct sunlight as the white, cream and pink parts are lacking the chlorophyll to process it. So, giving your plant direct sunlight will easily cause sunburn. These plants do best with indirect light, shade, or early morning sun.
If your String of Pearls is outdoors, make sure it has filtered light or bright shade.

Do Variegated String of Pearls flower?
Both the versions of the String of Pearls plants product white flowers. The flowers have a light cinnamon scent.
