A few years ago, I was needing to make some kind of improvement and modernize our Hallway Bathroom. The space was a creamy yellow with old outdated hardware and fixtures. I didn’t want to spend a ton of money completely gutting and redesigning the room, but it was in need of something.
I decided a modern take on Board and Batten would be ideal for the space. I decided to make mine a little higher than a traditional chair rail height and to paint in a fun bold color.

The thing is, I have had so many people rave about this bathroom and really it’s the beautiful modern board and batten wall that is the show stopper… also the wallpaper is amazing!

What are board and batten walls?

Board and batten is typically used as a feature statement in a room or sometimes is done on all four walls, but it can also be used on larger projects like barns and warehouses.

Best board and Batten materials to use
There are numerous types of wood that are ideal for board and batten use in your home.
I used Pine Trim Board and Pre-Primed MDF Boards for my Modern Board and Batten Bathroom wall.
Other good wood options are cedar, pine, oak, and redwood. Vinyl is more affordable and will have lower maintenance than wood as it doesn’t need to be painted or stained if you using it outdoors.

Board and Batten costs
The cost of board and batten will hugely vary depending on the type of material you choose and how much you are using in your space.
It can run anywhere from $2 to $12 per each siding piece. My project was about $200 for the wood + the paint and wallpaper costs.
Be sure to take measurements of your space, draw out your plan with the spacing you plan to use and then decide which wood type works best with your budget.
