I am drawn to plants with leaves that almost look painted and that is definitely a characteristic of the Arrowhead plant. This plant gets it’s name from the shape of it’s leaves. They resemble the shape of an arrowhead with a wider base and a more pointed tip. And every few weeks, the plant unfurls medium green leaves splashed with white, cream, silver, pink or purple.

Younger Arrowhead plants are typically characterized by their upright clusters of stems. As the plant matures, it can produce trailing or climbing stems and larger leaves.

It is also valued for it’s low maintenance, which is always a win in my book!

How to care for Arrowhead Plant

What are the best growing conditions for Syngonium podophyllum?

Arrowhead plants naturally thrive in more warm, humid conditions. They prefers bright, indirect light – but can tolerate lower light conditions.

Their foliage will be more vibrant and colorful when grown in brighter light, but you should avoid exposing Arrowheads to direct sunlight – as it can burn the leaves.

How often should I water my Arrowhead plant?

You should water your Arrowhead plant weekly, but avoid overwatering. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. This will help prevent root rot, which can be a common problem for Arrowhead plants.

I give my plant a light mist using this gorgeous green spray bottle and leave it out on the counter because it's so pretty.

While they appreciate higher humidity, however I live in the high desert of New Mexico and they grow just fine indoors here!

When you do water, water deeply until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. As always, make sure the pot you are using has good drainage.

Do Arrowhead plants like full sun?

No, Arrowhead plants do not like full sun. They prefer bright, but indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn their leaves and cause them to become stressed. You will notice they are getting too much light if their leaves start to yellow or turn brown.

If you grow your Arrowhead plant indoors, place it near a window that receives bright, indirect light. If you grow it outdoors, be sure to choose a spot that is shaded during the hottest part of the day.

Do Arrowhead plants like to climb or hang?

Arrowhead plants actually are not climbers or hangers.

In their native regions, these plants can be submerged in water with their leaves floating on the water’s surface. Arrowhead plants do not have aerial roots or tendrils that would enable them to climb or hang.
