Last week, I shared how to make Cardboard Peace Sign Ornaments. I had made them last year for my Peaceful Woodland Sparkle tree. I’m clearly having quite a thing for peace signs because today I am sharing how to make gorgeous Clay Peace Signs with polymer clay and embroidery floss.

I am obsessed with how they turned out and next week will be sharing how I used them in a wreath. Peace on Earth this Christmas season with all the peaces signs… here we come!

How to cut circles out of clay?

To cut out perfect circles from clay, it’s helpful to use two wooden square sticks. Set out a ball of warmed up clay in-between the square sticks and roll out using a clay rolling pin.

This will ensure perfectly even clay pieces. (After doing this step, I realized I needed slightly thinner clay and rolled mine a little bit more.)

Rolled out clay

Once you have your clay rolled out, it’s time to cut out the circles. You can use cookie cutters or in my case, I used biscuit presses. I used three different sizes; two big, one medium and two small ones.

Cut clay circles

Depending on how big your clay ornament is, it will determine the layout of your peace sign punches. For my larger ornaments, you can see in the design below, I planned on 16 outer ring punches. For the medium sized ornaments, I planned on 14 outer ring punches and 12 punches for the smallest size.

Using smaller sized biscuit cutters, I VERY lightly made a circle on each ring to keep my outer punches in a perfect circle shape. Then, using a wooden skewer I made the outer ring punches, as well as the center peace sign hole.

And don’t forget to make one additional hole at the top of your ornaments to tie your ribbon.

Punched Clay Rings

Make sure the holes are big enough for an embroidery needle to pass through. I had to make my holes a little bigger. Once you have made all your holes, it’s time to bake your clay. Follow the directions on your package.

What supplies do I need to embroider Peace Sign Ornaments?

How to embroider peace sign ornaments

Use your wire needle threader, embroidery thread and embroidery needle and thread the needle with the color of your choice.

I started at the very top hole of the circle, going from the back and going back in the center of the peace sign. Then, I came back up at the very bottom hole of the circle and started embroidering back and forth around the circle.

Embroider peace signs

You end up having to go around the entire circle twice, to fill in all the lines of your peace sign. And then come back up through the center hole and go to the right and then to the left to finish off your peace sign.

I decided to then go back and do around round of line work on the main circle for a little bit of a fuller look, but this step is completely up to you.
