DIY Painted Plastic Flatware

I am excited to share with you today my seventh 12 Months of Martha project, DIY Painted Plastic Flatware.

I’ve had this idea in my head for some time and I was finally able to take a few moments to make it happen.  We just made a big move from NM to IL and after unpacking all our boxes, I realized I somehow had THREE boxes of plain white plastic flatware that I have never opened or used.  

So let’s get started on how easy it is to paint plastic flatware to make it fun in just 15 minutes for your next party or get-together!  

What supplies do I need to paint plastic silverware?

• Acrylic Paints 
• Basic Craft Paint Brushes
• White Basic Plastic Flatware (OR Nicer Plastic Flatware colors available too)

How do you paint plastic cutlery?

Ready for the extremely simple steps on this DIY project?!

Start by washing the cutlery thoroughly with dish soap and warm water. Dry them off with a towel or allow to full air dry.

Then, wipe down each piece with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils or residue that might prevent the paint from adhering.

Next, set out all the plastic silverware you plan on painting. Place paper or a paint cloth down so there is somewhere for your wet silverware to dry.

If you want to create a dipped or patterned effect, use masking tape to cover the areas you don’t want painted. Press the tape firmly to avoid paint bleeding.

Or, using your favorite acrylic paints, paint a portion of the handle and set it aside to dry.

I did a mix of four different paint colors, pink, orange, yellow and a fun teal color. And I used those colors on my spoons, forks and knives.

Apply additional coats for better coverage and a more vibrant look.

Once the first coat of acrylic paint had dried, I gave them all one more coat and that was it!

Note : Do not paint any area near where your mouth will be touching.

The beauty of painting the handles of plastic flatware is that it doesn’t need to be dishwasher safe because you will be most likely throwing it out!  And it doesn’t even have to be edible safe because you are only painting the handles! Two big wins if you ask me for a simple party decor.

There is something about these bright colors that makes any meal just a little more special.
