I love slightly tweaking my Christmas color palette just a little bit from year to year.  I have done decor with lot of reds and blues , more classic colors with bold greens, gold and a touch of black, bright modern colors and this year I incorporated… PLANTS into my tree, ha!

And if softer pastels and watercolors are more your style, then you will love my  Merry Christmas Watercolor Party Garland and bonus, it is completely customizable to your home’s color palette.

How do I make a painted Watercolor Merry Christmas banner?

If you have watercolor paints in the colors you are wanting to use, you can skip my first step.  I however, didn’t have the correct colors SO, I made my acrylic paints work for me.  To give your acrylic paint a watercolor look, simply add a little paint to a cup and add water.

Next, I painted shapes, stripes and dots all over three sheets of watercolor paper.  Be sure to mix and match your colors on each page for a fun variated look.

Once the paint has dried, cut the sheets into varying widths.  I cut my garland anywhere from 2″ to 3″ in height.  I also cut varying heights and widths from a roll of copper contact paper and Gold Glitter Duck Tape.

Then, use a hot glue gun and glue your watercolor papers to your string.  I mixed in the Copper Contact Paper and the gold glitter tape every three flags.

  1. Hi Amy,
I guess you can call me a late bloomer when it comes to diy crafts and having the time to complete things. I love your ideas and all of the ways to make use of “stuff” I already have. You are blessed with unbelievably creative talent and I thank you for sharing. I have a question and it would probably only come from a newbie like me. Did you glue or tie the twine together with the Merry Christmas banner? And, here’s another thought. You know how Christmas cards received never really have a place to go? Well, you can add another piece of twine to the top and hang your cards or alternate between our watercolor designs. Just a thought! Thank you so much for being you!

You are too sweet, Debbie! As for your question, for this particular banner, I simply glued the paper onto the yarn/string. I hung it this year, too – so it holds up well. Great idea for repurposing those Christmas cards!

  2. This is SO pretty and I love the unexpected color palette for Christmas!

Thank you, Cyd! I’ve done reds and blues, I’ve done the typical colors but this year I really wanted to go a little Christmas color crazy! Having fun with it.

  3. Very pretty! I love water colors and this banner with the copper and gold accents is perfect! I really enjoy non-traditional Christmas colors. On point! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  7. Amy, I just love this! The colors are so lovely together, and I love how each little flag is totally unique. I’m funny about colors–I love minimal palettes with muted hues and lots of white. AND I also love fun, bright, bubbly colors!

I totally can relate, Marlene! Previous years, I’ve gone lots of color. It’s fun to mix it up year to year, too. =)
