Today is a fun day.  Today I have teamed up with four other amazing ladies with one simple challenge, Five Ways to DIY a pillow!  We all were tasked with taking the same pillow (we choose different colors) and putting our own design spin on it!  And today I am sharing my DIY Herringbone pastel Painted Pillow Cover.

What supplies do I need to paint a pillow?

How to start a painted herringbone pattern

First, I removed my pillow form from the case and put some folded wax paper inside so my paint would not seep through.

Next, I applied washi tape line roughly 2″ apart to keep my brushstroke pattern straight. I added fabric medium to my paint colors to keep the paint from cracking once dried.  And then it was time to paint the pillow.  I used free handed herringbone pattern.

I used the washi tape as a basic guideline for my negative space. And once I was done painting the entire front, I removed the washi tape and set the pillow aside to dry.

I was so pleased with the soft pastel brushstroke look and it was a perfect addition to my guest bedroom.

  1. Love this! It’s so simple and fabulous. I haven’t found the right pillows for my daughter’s nursery and I’m not particularly good at sewing so getting a premade pillow & painting is RIGHT up my alley. Awesome post, pinning. 🙂

  4. This is so fun! How do wash a pillow that has fabric paint on it? Is it machine washable? Thanks! 🙂

    1. delineateyourdwelling says:

Thanks Vida! I did use fabric medium but that was simply so the paint wouldn’t crack. I don’t think this particular paint is machine washable.

  5. 100% pinned and loving this simple, creative idea! Love love the colors you chose and how it all comes together on the bed! Saying hello the creative collection!
