August is here and that means it’s back to school season! Something about my kids getting back to the classroom makes me immediately want to purge all of our old pens and eraser missing pencils with new fresh writing untensils.

Plus was nothing wrong with my little old aqua pot but it just wasn’t working for holding all of our pencils and pens anymore. We needed a new storage solution!

Rotating Pencil Caddy

While strolling through Home Goods the other day, I found the perfect container. However, I was not a fan of how it looked. But I knew with a simple DIY, this budget friendly project would be well worth the effort.

Today I am going to show you how to go from boring blah to bright white with my new Updated Pencil Holder!

Before Pencil Holder

Here is a quick shot of my before pot.  It certainly was not bad, but it was overflowing and very disorganized. It was time for something new!

What supplies do I need to update my pencil storage?

How to upcycle an old pencil caddy

The first thing to do when updating an old pencil caddy, is cleaning off any dirt and grime. My rotating caddy was new, so I just a very simple wipe down with vinegar spray.

Next, put down a small paint cloth and give everything a light coat of spray paint. Don’t forget to spray inside each of the pencil slots.

After two or three coats of paint, it was ready to get a little gold love!  Out came my trusty gold foil paint pen.

First, I painted the top knob and top edges with gold.

Next I painted eight thin stripes along the entire top portion. You could use a ruler if you wanted, but I just free handed my lines. I like a little more of the organic (imperfect) look.

This pencil storage works so much better for us now. Simple, clean and white with a little gold shimmer!
